Adjunctive therapies

Acupuncture treatment is sometimes supported by other carefully chosen techniques, each with specific benefits. This is to enhance the overall treatment benefit, according to the individual’s diagnosis and treatment objectives.

  • Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a deeply relaxing and nourishing addition to a treatment when suitable and indicated for the individual’s condition. Made from the artemisia plant, and applied in different forms, it puts warmth into specific acupuncture points and areas. This can be particularly useful when aiming to move qi and blood, as well as replenishing yang qi in certain cases of depletion.

  • Cupping

Made famous by Michael Phelps and Tom Daley, cupping involves using suction cups on different parts of the body (frequently the back) to promote blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, and in chinese medical terms, move stagnant qi. The cups can be applied in specific areas and left static, or moved in sweeping motions (with oil on the skin). This results in a feeling of deep relaxation and renewed lightness in the body. It almost definitely will leave some marks which fade in a few days. As with all the treatment, consent will always be sought before doing this technique.

  • Gua sha

Using a specially shaped piece of jade or other natural stones, strong pressure is applied to soft tissues. This increases blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, and aids to highlight areas of congestion which further informs effective acupuncture treatment. Gua sha is particularly useful for some pain and many musculo-skeletal conditions. Like cupping, it may leave some red marks which will go in a few days. The benefits in how you feel make this worth it, but consent will always be asked for before doing it.
